The Scarebird by Sid Fleischman

Lonesome John was a farmer that had nobody to talk to. He made a scarecrow so that he would have somebody. Lonesome John cherished the moments with the scarecrow. He first gave it a raincoat when it was raining. He also gave him shoes, a hat and gloves. While playing checkers, a young man came along named Sam. Lonesome John hired him and took most of the scarecrow's things and gave them to Sam. The story ends when they sit on the porch and played harmonicas. The last thing that Lonesome John did is asked if Sam played checkers.

Directions: First, we gathered up old clothes that we would never use again. Then we used some for clothing and the others for stuffing. Some of us put a sheet over a paper mache head and colored the eyes and mouth, (Well, I did). Then we pinned all of the stuff together and it turned out to be a scarecrow!
