WHAT IS READING RECOVERY®?
Reading Recovery® is an early intervention program designed to help struggling
first graders learn to read and write. Reading Recovery® was developed
by New Zealand educator, Marie Clay. It is used world-wide and in several
different
languages. It is an individualized approach to learning to read and write
that takes the child from where they are to average or better in their
classrooms.

SPECIAL FEATURES OF THE PROGRAM:
1. Children are selected for Reading Recovery® after an extensive
screening test that allows us to identify the children with the greatest
need.
2. Each child gets a 30 minutes of daily one-on-one instruction for a period
of up to 20 weeks.
3. Each RR teacher receives one year of intensive training and then continues
their learning with methods discussions 4 times each year.
4. The teachers focus on the child’s strengths and not their weaknesses.
5. The children learn strategies to help them become independent readers.
6. Part of the lesson is also used for writing and the children must compose
their own messages.
7. Each lesson includes a detailed analysis of student reading and writing
behaviors.
8. Teachers select from a wide variety of small books which gradually increase
in difficulty.
9. Reading Recovery® teachers work closely with the classroom teachers.
10. There is a parent component to the program. Each parent is asked to do
ten minutes of reading with their child at home each night.
WHAT ARE THE PROGRAM RESULTS?
Most of the children who complete Reading Recovery® can perform
within the average achievement range and do not need remedial help
again. These children
continue to make progress in their regular classroom instruction and become
independent readers.
